Our first resident at the Encaustic Residency is Stewart Bird. Stewart is a digital artist hailing from Massachusettes with studios in Brooklyn. He uses encaustic to coat images that are generated from a special program he created that synthesizes photos he takes and recombines them into new forms. Out of those recombinants he chooses images that speak to him and then juxtaposes or collages them into new pieces. He expanded his practice while on residency to experiment with the use of color, mark making and texture. Listen to his interview about his process and the value of his time at the residency.
