Workshops

For artists who are interested in learning the technique, several workshops can be arranged on-site during their residency for 25Euros/person. These include:

-encaustic photography

-cyanotypes with encaustic 

-wax sculpture 

-encaustic iconography

-assemblage and collage using encaustic

-mark making with encaustic

-encaustic and botanicals 


Excursions

While artists are given creative freedom to use their time as they see fit, the suggested daily schedule allows for excursions to the cultural and natural sights of the island as well as for formal workshops around art making.  Here is a list of possible excursions and workshops that would enrich the residents’ experience:

Excursions:

-day trips to neighboring islands of Santorini, Naxos, Folengandros, Sikinos, Irakleia 

-guided tour of the Giatis-Simosis Museum

-guided tour of Homer’s Tomb archeological site

-guided tour of Skarkos settlement, one of the most advanced Early Bronze Age sites of the Aegean

-visit to the wine and cheese tasting and folk museum at Diaseli

-boat tours to hidden beaches such as Pikri Nero accessible only through boat around the island

-sunset photo tour of Paleokastro, Byzantine citadel and sanctuary

-tour of traditional goat farm and cheese maker in Kalamos

-nature walks through the many IOS Paths including to the lighthouse, St Eirene, the Byzantine fortress of Paleokastro

Additionally, the island boasts many traditional and fine restaurants, bakeries, and shops.  Our favorites (which provide discounts to residents) include:

To catch the sunset, climb up the hill of Chora to the Gremiotissa Church or enjoy a cocktail at iOS Club or Pathos sunset lounge.
